sent here to serve the public trust can summon one tiny iota that those teachers in newtown summoned on friday. if cooperation and common sense prevail, then i'm convinced we can make a sensible and intelligent way to make the united states of america a safer, stronger place for our children to learn and to grow. >> eliot: the president focused specifically on three proposals that appeared to have significant and growing support closing the gun show loophole so that background check is required and banning assault weapons and ammunition clips. he was then asked why it didn't happen in the first team. >> this is not the first prolific gun violence of your four years. where have you been? >> here's where i've been, jake. i've been president of the united states in an economic crisis since the great depression. two wars, i don't think i've been on vacation. so you know, i think all of us have to do some reflexion on how we prioritize what we do here in washington. >> eliot: for more i'm joining by michael tomaski thank you for joining us. >> always a pleasure, eliot. >> eliot: so did th

to pass common sense safety laws in the wake of the newtown shooting massacre. the president knows this is going to be a heavy lift. >> that's why i've asked the vice president to lead an effort that includes members of my cabinet and outside organizations to come up with a set of concrete proposals no later than january, proposals that i then intend to push without delay. this is not some washington commission. this is not something where folks are going to be studying the issue for six months and publishing a report that gets read and then pushed aside. >> one of the reasons the president is asking for action without delay is because he knows change can be accomplished, and it's been done before. the assault weapons ban signed by president clinton reduced crime lower than it had been in a generation. it's been 18 years since the crime bill was signed, and eight years since it was allowed to expire. perhaps 24 is why president obama is turning to the bill's architect for guidance. >> i want to single out for special recognition the chairman of the senate judiciary committee who ha

that vice president biden will spearhead his administration's response to the newtown shooting. the president is not expected to go into detail on policy decisions. the national rifle association has broken it's silence issuing a statement that reads in part this. the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. that's significant. >> can i stop for a second there? if progressives, if moderates, if conservatives that are concerned about these magazine clips and assault weapons, if they want to feel self-righteous and scream and yell, they can do it and we won't get a deal. this is like the fiscal cliff. in the end it's like in "lincoln" with the 13th amendment. if the nra comes out and says something like that, instead of everybody going, now that blood's on your hands, you know what? guess what? feel self-righteous. you can save lives, or you can feel self-righteous. beat your chest like jim and tammy faye bakker if that's how you sleep at night. if that gets you through the night, go ahead. i tell you what, the art of politics,

of the time. and particularly in the post-newtown period we're in now. that grislynd horrible massacre. the mood of the country has changed and he stepped up in a way that we really haven't seen and so i wanted the picture to be both familiar and unfamiliar both timeless and timely it's somber. it's meditative. it's deliberate. i think it's a really iconic picture. >> rose: you also have a profile in there of him and talking about this election which he says is more important than perhaps 2008 because he did n nt 28o look like an anomaly. >> yes, and the people by michael sherer, our white house correspondent, is a terrific story. that's the best way to look at it. because 2008 people thought maybe it is an anomaly. maybe it is as, barack obama said, lightning in a bottle. this attractive african american candidate, we've never had an african american president before. what i think he means by saying this was more satisfying is this that this ratify it is changes that gave an inkling of. there's something going on now. there's a polital and cuural reignmt going on. there's been a lot o
